Sam Roberts and I. First night hearing his music was at Rock The Shores with The Tragically Hip. A lightning storm cut his set down to 25-ish minutes, which was super lame, because he rocked so hard. I definitely recommend his music. We look a little pooped in this picture, but I guess we were!
Anyway, I got to hang out backstage with him. Turns out his parents are South African. He goes back almost every two years. Who would have thought? He’s such a great guy. After 20 minutes he invited me to his backstage room and got me a beer from his private stash. Best. I’m gonna pay him a visit when I (Maybe) come to Montreal in November.
On a side note, this past month I got to hang out with a few really awesome people/musicians who I totally love. Jasmin from Mother Mother was at a wedding I shot and I ate pulled-pork sandwiches/drank pints of Guinness with/went bar-hopping with We Are The City, The Sheep Dogs and of course, SAID THE WHALE (Fan Girling a little here). Thanks, Andy, for inviting Connor and I out. Ben, Tyler, Jaycelyn and Spencer are such nice and down to earth people. Nathan wasn’t there, but I’m sure he’s a nice guy too. Dan Mangan was hanging out in the bars as well, which is funny, because he introduced the couple whose wedding I shot (where Jasmin was attending) to each-other three years ago on one of his tours.
Oh, did I mention I too a picture backstage of Gord Downie? So, you Canadian friends are going to hate me, but I had no idea who he was and have never listened to The Tragically Hip until I heard them last night at Rock The Shores… I just saw this really really stylish looking guy hanging out behind the scenes, playing his lute and talking to Scott from Current Swell. I walked up to him and said, “I really dig your style, mind if I take a picture of you?” He was like, “yeahhhhh. Totally.” And that was that. I also gave him one of my instax polaroids. Hopefully he keeps it. Anyways, a few of my friends backstage freaked out when I got back to them after what I did. Then I realized who he was.
The were fantastic on stage. Something else, really. Pictures soon, I promise. ;)
So the past little while has been super crazy fantastic. Loving summer.

I was wondering around backstage during City and Colour’s set, and found this guy chilling on the stage, with one of the best views in the festival. I joined him, of course. We hung out and watched Dallas Green give the Rifflandia audience a killer show.
